Embrace the Chill: How Ditching Hibernation Changed My Life for the Better

Let me tell you how I made a significant change in my life by ditching hibernation during the cold months and started taking daily walks outside, rain or shine, ice cold or windy. And let me tell you, it’s been a game-changer.

Throughout my adult life, I’ve never felt the urge to go outside in winter just for fun. It’s usually been a necessity, like going to work or shoveling snow. I would joke about how I was born in the tropics and the extreme cold wasn’t for me. I even tried skiing for a couple of winters but found bundling up too much of a chore. But I liked the idea of skiing because it was something to do.

Since I no longer had to commute to my office job, my time spent outdoors was diminished. I began to question my aversion to rainy weather and whether or not I would be affected by it. I mean, does anyone melt from being out in the rain?

Eventually, I challenged myself to walk outside daily unless it risked my safety, which rarely happens. I realized that ditching hibernation meant I could take 99% of the opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

How Did Ditching Hibernation Change My Life?

I have found that going outdoors every day has made a significant difference in my life. No longer do I feel confined and restless inside. Breathing in the fresh and crisp air while admiring the winter landscape has been refreshing for my mind and body. It’s like hitting the reset button; I feel more connected and alive to the world around me.

Taking brisk walks in winter has improved my lungs and energy levels. When the crisp air hits your lungs, it triggers a refreshing feeling that awakens your senses. This sensation can be incredibly invigorating. It can help to clear your mind and energize your body. It can be both calming and revitalizing, leaving you with a sense of renewed energy and clarity.

And let’s not forget the importance of daylight during winter. I used to dread those short, dark days, but now I make it a point to get outside and soak up as much natural light as possible. It’s like a mood-boosting elixir that helps stave off the winter blues and keeps me upbeat.

Now, I know what you’re thinking–making a lifestyle change like ditching hibernation is no easy feat. And you’re right, it’s not. But I’ve found that making things as easy as possible was vital to sticking with it.

Eliminating as many obstacles as possible made sticking to my new habit much easier. To achieve this, I invested in quality cold-weather gear to keep me warm and dry. I ensured each item was easy to put on and could do the job effectively. I keep them stacked neatly so I can access them easily and quickly get out the door.
